Abstract

Postpartum depression affects both baby and mother after birth, and involves both physical and mental effects, including maternal role adjustment, and is especially common among first-time mothers. This predictive study aimed to determine predictive factors of postpartum depression among first postpartum women including marital satisfaction, self-esteem, childcare stress, life stress and social support. A total of 164 participants took part in this study. Participants were 4-8 weeks postpartum and visited postpartum clinics or took their babies to well-baby clinics in the hospitals located in Chonburi province. Simple random sampling was used to identify these participants. Data collection was conducted during August to October 2019. A set of questionnaires collected demographic data, Thai Edinburgh Postnatal Depression (EPDS) scale, Thai version of the Dyad Adjustment Scale, Self-Esteem scale, Thai Childcare Stress Inventory, Life events questionnaire, and Postpartum support questionnaires were used for data collection. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Results showed that 33.33 % of first postpartum women had postpartum depression. The results showed that taking care of the child, life event stresses, and social support, were likely to predict the rate of postpartum depression at 16.50% (Adjust R2 .165, F=7.351, p<.05). The most important predictor was childcare stress (β=.379) followed by life event stress (β=.219) and social support (β=.215). The findings of this study suggest nurses should pay more attention to the assessment and screening of postpartum depression for all first postpartum women. A health education program that involves family members regarding how to overcome stress during the postpartum period should be implemented to prevent postpartum depression for first postpartum women.
