Abstract

Dementia is a syndrome in older adults characterized by a progressive decline in memory and other cognitive functions, which affects behavior and the ability to perform activities of daily living. The objective of this study was to examine and compare the effects of a self-efficacy enhancement program using the LINE application on dementia-preventive behaviors among older adults in Bangkok. The participants in this quasi-experimental study comprised 72 older adults aged 60–79 years residing in Bangkok, who were equally divided into an experimental group (n = 36) and a control group (n = 36). The experimental group received a 7-week self-efficacy enhancement program via the LINE application, consisting of weekly 45-to-60-minute group sessions, supplemented by cognitive stimulation homework assigned through the LINE application every two weeks. The control group received routine care. Data were collected using a personal information questionnaire, a dementia-preventive behavior scale (Cronbach's alpha = .96), and the Thai version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-Thai). Data were collected at baseline and at week 7, with monitoring via Google Forms every two weeks. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (paired-samples t-tests and independent-samples t-tests). The results revealed that after the intervention, the mean score of dementia-preventive behaviors in the experimental group was significantly higher than its baseline score and significantly higher than that of the control group. Therefore, the self-efficacy enhancement program via the LINE application can effectively improve dementia-preventive behaviors. This program empowers older adults by fostering their perceived self-efficacy and building their confidence in maintaining self-care practices to prevent dementia.
