Abstract

This descriptive correlational research aimed to explore the frailty and health-related quality of life among older people at Thanyaburi district of Pathumthani province. The sample of this study consisted of 150 senior citizens. The data were collected using a structured questionnaire including demographic data, Mini-Mental State Examination - Thai version, a frailty scale assessment, and Health-Related Quality of Life by the Short form-36. These questionnaires were approved for content validity by three experts. The reliability of the frailty scale assessment tested using Kuder-Richardson-20 was .73. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was used to examine the reliability of the Mini-Mental State Examination - Thai version and Health-Related Quality of Life by the Short form-36 that were .80 and .88. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation.

The results revealed that elderly health-related quality of life was at a medium level (mean = 67.13), the physical and mental component score was at a low level (mean = 44.02, 48.79, respectively). Frailty was significantly related to decreasing the older person’s health-related quality of life and physical component (r = -.341, p < .01 and r = -.350, p <. 01), which were significantly related to a decreasing mental component (r = -.181, p .05). Results from this study provided important information to prevent frailty and enhance the health-related quality of life among older people.
