Effectiveness of Weaning Mechanical Ventilator Protocol in Pediatric Patients, Udonthani Hospital

Abstract

This quasi-experimental research aimed to study the effects of weaning ventilator protocol for pediatric patients in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Udonthani hospital. The samples were children age from 1 month to 15 years old and put on mechanical ventilator for more than 24 hours. Thirty patients were purposive sampling divided to 2 groups, control and experimental group. Fifteen patients in the experimental group received weaning ventilator protocol developed by the researcher and fifteen patients in the control group received usual weaning ventilator care by the physicians and nurses. Tools consisted of weaning ventilator protocol and weaning ventilator form. The data was collected from 1st June to 31st August 2015. Evaluated the successful weaning and ventilator days. Data was analyzed in SPSS program version 16 using percentage, mean, standard deviation, Chi-square and t-test.

The results showed that the successful weaning in the control group and the experimental group was 53.3 and 86.7% respectively with no statistically significant (p=0.01). Ventilator days in the control and experimental group was these shown 18.27 and 12.53 days, statistically difference (p=0.01). The finding of this study confirmed that implementing weaning mechanical ventilator protocol for pediatric patients in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Udonthani hospital for improving quality of care was able to positive outcomes. Therefore, should be implementing in the routine of pediatric patients ventilator care.
