Abstract

Cosmetic dentistry plays a vital role in dentistry now. One of the problems that patients frequently came to dental clinics is the excessive gingival display, such as a gummy smile and short teeth, resulting in less confidence in their smile. The etiologies of excessive gingival display might be distributed to gingival enlargement, altered passive eruption, vertical maxillary excess, short upper lip, hyperactive upper lip, etc. Understanding its etiologies can be challenging due to multiple factors those may be involved. Accurate diagnosis and treatment plan are crucial to improve the outcomes.

This case report presented a diagnostic, treatment plan, and esthetic crown lengthening in a 25-year-old Thai male who came to the dental clinic with the feeling that his teeth were too short. After an oral examination, the patient was diagnosed with excessive gingival display due to altered passive eruption. An esthetic crown lengthening procedure was performed on the maxillary anterior region, and follow-up visits were scheduled for 1, 3 and 6 months after the procedure. The patient expressed his satisfaction and was more confident with his smile.
