Abstract

Treatment of gallbladder disease by laparoscopic cholecystectomy is widely used treatment because a minimally invasive surgery, but several factors can still cause complications after gallbladder surgery. This research aimed to study the incidence of complications after laparoscopic cholecystectomy and factors affecting complications after laparoscopic gallbladder surgery. This was a retrospective descriptive research in 308 patients diagnosed with laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The research instrument was a patients collection form from medical records between May 31, 2023 and July 31, 2025. The analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, incidence of complications was compared using Repeated Measures ANOVA, and logistic regression.

Results: The incidence of complications after laparoscopic cholecystectomy at Udon Thani Hospital in a data collection period of 26 months between May 31, 2023 and July 31, 2025. The incidence of complications was found 1.9% per year. Factors significantly associated (p< 0.05) with the occurrence of complications after laparoscopic gallbladder surgery included major symptoms prior to hospitalization, diagnosis, use of analgesic medication, underlying medical conditions, duration of surgery, anemic patients requiring post-surgical blood transfusions. Variable analysis by grouping the variables revealed that the factor significantly affecting complications after laparoscopic gallbladder surgery was the symptom of bloating or abdominal distension prior to hospitalization (AOR= 7.13; 95%CI: 1.23-41.16, p= 0.008), cholelithiasis (AOR = 0.02; 95%CI: 0.00-0.15, p= 0.024), chronic cholecystitis (AOR = 0.18; 95%CI: 0.06-0.58, p= 0.004), hypertension (AOR = 4.86; 95%CI: 1.23-8.67, p= 0.001), hyperlipidemia (AOR = 2.01; 95%CI: 1.02-1.63, p= 0.024) and diabetes mellitus (AOR = 1.04; 95%CI: 0.02-0.64, p= 0.037).

Conclusion: Laparoscopic gallbladder surgery at Udon Thani Hospital had an incidence of postoperative complications of 1.9% per year.
