Abstract

Objective: To study the impact of a family- and community-
engaged groupmotivation enhancement therapy
on the drinking behaviour of alcohol addicts treated at
Chiang Klang Hospital, Nan province.
Design: Experimental one-group research with a pre-test and a post-test.
Procedure: The sample consisted of 15 purposively sampled participants.
Data were collected between July 2013 and September 2014.
The three instruments employed for the research were
(1) personal information; (2) the family- and community-engaged group
-motivation enhancement therapy model developed by the researcher
based on Miller & Rollnick’s motivation enhancement framework
and based on relevant reviewed literature; and 
(3) the Alcohol Use Disorders Identifcation Test (AUDIT)
and The University of Rhode Island Change Assessment (URICA).
The data were analysed using descriptive statistics,
one-way repeated measure ANOVA, and T-test.
Results: The study shows the participants’ signifcant decrease in alcohol
consumption at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after receiving the therapy (p < .01).
Recommendations: This therapy programme effectively helped
alcoholic addicts to reduce the amount of drinking.
It is recommended, therefore, that public health
officials apply this model to regular follow-up systems
that engage families, caretakers, and community leaders
in treating alcoholic addicts.
