Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of implementing clinical practice guidelines (CPG) for pain management among women with normal vaginal delivery (NVD) in the labor room, at Pakphanang Hospital of Nakhon Si Thammarat. The purposive sampling technique was used to collect data from 40 women with NVD who received routine nursing care from October to November 2021, and 40 women with NVD who received care based on the CPG from December 2021 to January 2022. The research instrument was the CPG for pain management in normal parturient women developed by Buppasuwan (2008). The study was conducted based on the conceptual framework of CPG, which was created by the Registered Nurse Association of Ontario (2002). The data collection tool consisted of the numeric rating pain scale. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and an independent t-test.

The results showed that the women with NVD who received care based on the CPG had significantly lower pain scores in a phase of 4-7- and 8-10-centimeter cervical dilatation (M= 6.38, S.D.=1.60 and M= 7.20, S.D.= 0.77) than those who received routine nursing care in a phase of 4-7- and 8-10-centimeter cervical dilatation (M= 7.29, S.D.=1.29 and M=8.28, S.D.= 0.93, respectively) at 0.05 level of statistical significance.

The findings suggested that the CPG for pain management should be implemented among women with NVD to reduce their pain, resulting in quality-of-care improvement.
