Phleng So Lanna: The reflection of ethical values in human development

Abstract

This qualitative research aims to analyze the ethical values reflected in Phleng So (Lanna folk songs) in relation to human development. Data were collected through purposive sampling from 10 selected participants and analyzed using descriptive writing methods. The findings reveal 2 key dimensions of ethical values expressed in Phleng So: 1) values related to individual and family development, which emphasize conveying life lessons, fostering moral virtues, and promoting spiritual growth based on Buddhist principles; and 2) values associated with social concepts and norms, highlighting roles, responsibilities, and adherence to societal standards, thereby fostering moral awareness and ethical consciousness. The study suggests that Phleng So serve as a medium for transmitting cultural beliefs and behavioral guidelines aligned with social conventions. They play a significant role in encouraging personal development, strengthening community relationships, and enhancing overall well-being, which are essential factors in improving quality of life and promoting harmonious coexistence within society.
