Interpreting Symbolism and Cultural Reproduction of the Seven Sacraments of Roman Catholicism in Bangkok through Online Media: A Case Study in the Post-COVID-19 Next Normal Context

Abstract

This study aims to examine the religious signs embedded in the Seven Sacraments of Roman Catholicism and to explore how these sacred rituals have been culturally reproduced and transmitted via online media in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. The research employs semiotic theory alongside the Tree of Values framework to analyze qualitative data gathered through in-depth interviews and participant observation. The findings reveal that although the mode of performing rituals has shifted from on-site to online formats, the core essence conveyed through religious signs remains intact. These signs notably represent enduring faith in the sacraments, communal unity among Christians, and the construction of digital faith communities. The online transmission of sacraments does not diminish their religious value but instead enables the continuity of faith practices within the “Next Normal,” addressing both physical and technological limitations. The study highlights the dynamic transformation of religious belief in contemporary society, cultural adaptation through media, and the capacity of digital platforms to preserve the structure and significance of sacred rituals during periods of societal transition.
