THE DEVELOPMENT AND EFFECTS OF EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM ON SELF-CARE BEHAVIORS AMONG PATIENTS WITH SUBSTANCE-INDUCED PSYCHOTIC DISORDER

Abstract

               Objective: To develop the empowerment program and to test effects of empowerment program on self-care behaviors of patients with substance-induced psychotic disorder.


               Methods: This study was the research and development with the procedure: 1) to develop an empowerment program by analyzing situations and drafting the program; 2) to experiment the prototype program and to test the quality of tools; and 3) to test the effect of program. The sample group was 40 patients with substance-induced psychotic disorder randomly selected by Match pair method and divided into experimental and control group of 20 participants for each group. Research tools include the empowerment program, the demographic data questionnaire, and the self-care behavior assessment tool. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and t-test.


               Results: The results of this study were as follows: 1) The content of the program was valid and appropriate. The IOC (Item Objective Congruence) coefficients ranged between 0.6 - 1.0. The program consisted of six activities conducting as group activities in the hospital for 3 weeks. 2)  After the experiment, the mean score of self-care behaviors of substance-induced psychotic disorder patients that participated in the empowerment program was significantly higher than patients that were cared normally with the statistical significance (p < .001).


               Conclusion: The results of this study could be applied to develop on self-care behavior’s of persons with substance-induced psychotic disorder. Therefore, the program could be implemented for those persons in hospitals.
