THE ILLNESS SELF - MANAGEMENT PROGRAM FOR PATIENTS’ SELF CARE ABILITY: RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

Abstract
Objectives: To develop the illness self -management program to promote patients’ self care ability and examine effects of the developed program on patients’ self care ability.
Methods: This research was a research and development (R&D). The subjects were sixty patients with Schizophrenia who were admitted at the Loei Rajanagarindra Psychiatric Hospital. They were assigned into the illness self - management program to promote patients’ self care ability group and usual care group, 30 subjects in each group. Research instrument for data collection was the self care behavior assessment form of Schizophrenic patients. Data was analyzed by t - test.
Results: The results of this study were as followed: 1) The illness self - management program for patients’ self care ability had IOC (Item Objective Congruence) coefficients equal to 1.0 2) Mean score of self care ability among Schizophrenic patients who receiving illness self -management program for patients’ self care ability was significantly higher than that of Schizophrenic patients who receiving usual care at < .001 level The result of this study suggested that the illness self - management program for patients’ self care ability can enhance the self care ability among Schizophrenic patients.
