THE DEVELOPMENT OF HAPPINESS SCALE FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS

Abstract
Objective: To develop the Happiness Scale for parents of children with the Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and assess psychometric properties of the Happiness Scale of Parents of Children with ASD (HPCA).
Methods: This descriptive research was divided into three phases for development of instrument involving: 1) generating items and testing for content validity, 2) construct validity and reliability study, and 3) convergent and divergent validity study of the scale developed. Using content analysis of prior qualitative data for the initial phase, the basic HPCA Scale was developed. Content validity was examined by seven experts. Content validity index (CVI) was .89. Reliability of the developed scale by Cronbach’s alpha was .95. The scale was further revised from 70 to 62 items (variables) for utilizing in the second phase. A quantitative approach used exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and reliability analysis were used to examine psychometric properties of revised HPCA Scale. Finally, convergent and divergent validity were tested.
Results: Major findings were as follows: A third run in EFA produced 47 items and nine components, accounting for 67.75% of total explained variance. Cronbach’s alpha for the nine components ranged from .76 to .91. CFA results indicated that the model fit the population covariance matrix reasonably well. Convergent and divergent validity tests showed the HPCA Scale are valid.
