NURSE AND THE OPERATION OF COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH AND PSYCHIATRY

Abstract
The purposes of this article were to present concepts, principles and review of the knowledge about community mental health and psychiatric nursing using the guidelines of caring for chronic psychiatric patients in community and standards of psychiatric and community mental health nursing services. Psychiatric nurses and professional nurses who are responsible for mental health and psychiatric work in community can apply the knowledge to take care of mental health and chronic psychiatric patients in the community in accordance with national policy on mental health care. Currently, the number of psychiatric patients is increasing and psychiatric disorders cause high disability leading to low patients’ quality of life and high social burden. Consequently, the community psychiatric nurses have important role in promoting and preventing mental health problems in the community and providing continuing care by supporting person with chronic psychiatric illness to be able to take care of themselves and adherence to treatment leading to reduce relapse and enhance patients’ quality of life as well as reduce caregivers’ burden.
