Main Article Content
Abstract
Objectives: To examine the effect of Family Motivational Intervention (FMI) on medication adherence of persons with schizophrenia in community.
Methods: The research was a quasi experimental design. The sample consisted of 40 families of persons with schizophrenia in com munity who met the inclusion criteria and received services at the outpatient department in Samchuk Hospital. The subjects were matched pair by age and medication adherence behavior and then randomly assigned into experimental group and control group, 20 families in each group. The experimental group received the FMI and the control group received regular nursing care. Research instruments were: 1) the FMI, 2) The Medication Adherence Scale, 3) The Stage of Change Readiness and Treatment Eagerness Scale, 4) The Competency of Motivation Interviewing Scale, and 5) The Competency of Motivation Interviewing Observational Scale. All instruments were verified for content validity by 5 professional experts. The reliability of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th instrument was reported by Cronbach’s alpha as of .83, .82 and .81 and the 5th instrument was reported by Pearson’s correlation as of .99. The t-test was used for data analysis. Results: 1) Medication adherence of persons with schizophrenia in community who received the FMI was significantly higher than that before (p < .05). 2) After the experiment, medication adherence of persons with schizophrenia in community who received the FMI was significantly higher than that of those who received the regular nursing care (p < .05).
