Abstract

Objective: This descriptive correlational research design aimed at investigating relationships between resilience and intimacy of friendship with bullying in disadvantaged adolescents.

Methods: The participants consisted of 212 secondary school students studying in year 1 - 6, second semester of academic year 2561 from a school for disadvantaged adolescents in the Northeast region of Thailand. The research instruments including a Demographic Questionnaire, Adolescent Peer Relations Instrument, Resilience Inventory, and Friendship Intimacy Questionnaire were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and Spearman rank correlation coefficient.

                Results: The findings revealed that the resilience scores and all dimensions of resilience (I have, I am, and I can) were negatively and significantly related to bullier scores (r = -.19, p = .005; r = -.22, p = .002; r = -.17, p = .013; r = -.15, p = .028 respectively). The resilience scores and all dimensions of resilience (I have, I am, and I can) were negatively and significantly related to victim scores (r = -.19, p = .007; r = -.22, p = .001; r = -.15, p = .030;     r = -.15, p = .031 respectively). Intimacy of friendship was not related to bullier scores (r = .01, p = .871). However, intimacy of friendship was negatively and significantly related to victim scores (r = -.15, p = .026).

Conclusion: The result from this study could be used as basic information to promote resilience in disadvantaged adolescents.
