Abstract

Objective: To study the effect of participation among faculties and students in quit smoking behavior of students who were smokers.

Methods: It is quasi-experimental research. The sample group was male students from a University, Bangkok. They were divided into 30 experimental groups and 30 control group. Research tools include 1) General information questionnaire smoking behavior intention to quit smoking balance in decision making Self-efficacy in smoking cessation and smoking cessation behavior 2) A model of participation of professors and leading students in changing smoking cessation behavior through 5 experts to check the validity of the questionnaire and to be able to experiment with a group that is like the sample group. The confidence value is 0.84. The data collection process consisted of experimental group was educated for tobacco toxicity and smoking cessation and attended faculties and students’ activities in transtheoretical model for smoking cessation weekly. Experimental groups had received consultation via Line application for 4 months and were evaluated the outcome after 2 months. Whereas the control group was educated, received pamphlets, and was evaluated after 2 months. Demographic data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The difference average scores between experimental and control group were analyzed by independent t-test. The scores included balancing of decision making, self-efficacy, and behavior in smoking cessation after intervention.

Results: The experimental group showed significantly higher average score than the control group in balancing of decision-making self-efficacy and behavior in smoking cessation (p-value < .05). The experimental group confidently followed instruction to quit smoking that the control group with statistical significance (p-value < .05).

Conclusion: It should be done after long-term follow-up studies to see if smoking cessation behaviors can be modified. and can use the Line group to give advice to change the smoking cessation behavior of the students in higher education institutions.
