Abstract

Objective: To develop an integrated instructional model enhancing health promotion competencies of older persons among nursing students and to study the effectiveness of the model.

Methods: The study was composed of four phases, including: Phase 1 analyze the situation; Phase 2 design an integrated instructional model; Phase 3 implement the model; and Phase 4 evaluate the model. The samples included 14 nursing students of Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Nopparat Vajira in the 2563 academic year. The instruments were 1) the integrated knowledge and the analytical, connected thinking and integrated problem solving competencies scale 2) the questionnaires of nursing students’, instructors’, and older persons’ opinions towards the model 3) the practical integrated instructional manual for instructors and nursing students 4) the scenarios and 5) the stress test (SPST-20). The data analysis included the mean, standard deviation, Wilcoxon signed ranks test and content analysis.

Results: The integrated instructional model involved 4 components: 1) Content and main concept 2) Interacting among teachers, learners, and clients based on caring 3) Integrated teaching and learning process and 4) Authentic assessment. The process took 1 week. After implementing, the overall mean scores of the integrated knowledge and the analytical, connected thinking and integrated problem solving competencies of nursing students were significantly higher than the pretest scores at the .01 level. The number of older persons with mental health problem in the community with high level of stress has decreased from 42.86 percentage to 14.29 percentage. The older persons and caregivers satisfied with the model and the invited experts approved the model for its accuracy, helpfulness, appropriateness and possibility.

Conclusion: The integrated instructional model could be used for enhancing the health promotion competencies of older persons among nursing students. The nursing institutions should apply this model among older persons with mental health problems in other communities.
