Abstract

Objective: To determine the effects of caregiver training program with reflection on the stress management skill of caregiver of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Methods: The purpose of this quasi-experiment research. The sample consisted of 52 caregivers of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, who were recruited using the inclusion criteria. They were randomly assigned random number generator to the control and experimental groups, with 26 subjects in each group. The experimental group participated in the caregiver training program with reflection which comprised 4 sessions. The control group received routine care. The research instruments were the following: The caregiver training program with reflection and a stress management skills scale which determined the reliability with a Cronbach’ s alpha coefficient of .87. The data analysis was performed through descriptive statistics and t-test.

Results: The mean score on the post-test (Mean = 61.31, SD = 3.78) of participants in the experimental group after participating in the program was significantly greater than the pre-test (Mean = 43.58, SD = 3.41) (t = 7.98, p < .001) and 2) The mean difference of the mean score of stress management skills between the pre-test and post-test in the experimental group (Mean difference [MD] = 17.73, SD = 5.67) was significantly greater than that of the control group. (Mean difference [MD] = -.62, SD = 1.65) (t = 7.92, p <.001).

Conclusion: It can be concluded that the caregiver training program with reflection can enhance the stress management skills of caregiver of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
