PERSPECTIVES ON MENTAL LITERACY OF PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS ATTENDING AT CENTRAL SPECIAL EDUCATION CENTER 5, SUPHAN BURI PROVINCE

Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to explain the perspectives on mental health literacy of parents of children with special needs at Central Special Education Center 5, Suphan Buri Province.
Methods: A qualitative descriptive research design, Key informants were a total of 14 parents of children with special needs. Data were collected using in-depth interviews using a semi-structured questionnaire during January 2024. The interviews were analyzed by using content analysis.
Results: The mental health literacy of parents of children with special needs can be categorized into six domains, including 1) telling of mental suffering, 2) telling of the cause of health problems, 3) self-care for mental well-being, 4) asking for healthcare professional assistance, 5) health care accessibility, and 6) difficulty.
Conclusion: The knowledge received from this research is beneficial to parents of children with special needs in promoting mental health literacy to be able to understand the occurrence of mental health problems have a positive attitude towards people with mental health problems and seek appropriate sources of help. This prevents further serious mental health problems.
