Abstract

Objective: This research aimed to develop and examine the effects of a self-control skills enhancement program for preventing bullying behavior among primary school students in Grades 1 - 3.

Methods: The study employed a research and development design, comprising two phases. The first phase involved program development in collaboration with experts in child and adolescent mental health, Grade 1 - 3 primary school teachers, and school health personnel. The second phase involved program evaluation among a purposively selected group of teachers and students from a primary school in Samut Prakan Province. The research instruments included the self-control skills enhancement program, a teacher opinion questionnaire on the program, a teacher evaluation form of participating students, a strengths and difficulties questionnaire, and a peer interaction questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Chi-Square Test to compare pre-program, post-program, and follow-up phase results.

Results: The program consisted of three lesson plans for teachers and three for students. The results indicated that the mean score of teachers' opinions about the program during the follow-up phase was higher than in the pre- and post-intervention phases. Students’ mean knowledge scores showed statistically significant improvements between pre- and post-intervention and between pre- and follow-up phases (p < .05). Likewise, skill scores showed significant differences between pre- and post-intervention and between pre- and follow-up phases (p < .05). Statistically significant differences were also found in students’ strengths and difficulties scores and in peer interaction scores specifically, regarding both being bullied and bullying others between the pre and follow-up phases (p < .05).

Conclusion: The program effectively enhanced teachers' knowledge, skills, and attitudes, while also improving student behavior and learning outcomes. This indicates that the program is a practical tool for promoting mental health and preventing bullying behavior among early primary school students.
