PERSPECTIVE OF EMPOWERING CAREGIVERS OF CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS LIVING IN THE COMMUNITY OF SUPHANBURI PROVINCE

Abstract
Objective: To describe the empowerment of caregivers of children with special needs living in the community of Suphanburi Province.
Methods: This study employed a descriptive qualitative design. The participants consisted of 30 community members involved in the care of children with special needs, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews conducted in February 2025. The data were analyzed using content analysis.
Results: Participants' perspectives on caregiver empowerment were divided into two main issues: The first issue was related to the perceived problems of parents' attitudes, which were further divided into two sub-issues: 1) parents' lack of knowledge about caring for children with special needs, and 2) parents' concerns about their children's future. The second issue involved seeking ways to support caregivers, which was divided into three sub-issues: 1) providing parents with training in caring for children with special needs, 2) supporting parents' mental health, and 3) promoting the use of technology to assist parents. The caregivers' perspectives on empowerment in mental health included two issues: 1) prioritizing self-care (physical and mental well-being), and 2) ensuring that the child’s development is positive, which in turn supports the caregivers' mental health.
Conclusion: This study emphasizes the importance of providing support to caregivers of children with special needs in areas such as knowledge, skills, and mental health, to empower them to care effectively for their
