Abstract

Objective: To study perspectives and expectations of the mental health service system in relation to perceived stigma among male schizophrenic patients: a model of happy care.

Methods: A qualitative study using Martin Heidegger's interpretive phenomenology (Heidegger, 1962). The data collection period was from November 2023 to November 2024, totaling one year. Informants were purposively selected. Key informants were 16 male patients diagnosed with schizophrenia and admitted as inpatients with stable mental health conditions who were willing to participate in this study. The research instrument used was an in-depth interview guideline. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, tape recordings, observations, and field notes. Data was analyzed using Leonard's interpretation method (Leonard, 1989). Data was transcribed verbatim and analyzed for essential content according to the research objectives. The data was validated with key informants and discussed with experts.

Results: Findings on perspectives and expectations of the mental health service system in relation to perceived stigma among male schizophrenic patients. The findings present a model of happy care. The informants shared their perspectives on five areas of accumulated experience: 1) feelings of emotional distress, 2) feelings of low self-worth, 3) desire for the health care system, 4) improvements in service facilities, and 5) happiness.

Conclusion: Perceptions of stigma influence male schizophrenic patients' experiences of accessing and using mental health services. Therefore, service system development should prioritize reducing stigma, improving facilities, and creating services that respond to patients' definitions of happiness. This aims to reduce stigma, increase treatment compliance, promote psychiatric rehabilitation, and restore well-being.
