DEPRESSION, IMAPCTS FROM DEPRESSION AND FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH DEPRESSION AMONG UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS OF UBON RATCHATHANI RAJABHAT UNIVERSITY

Abstract

               Objective: This research aimed to examine the prevalence and impacts from depression and factors associated with depression among undergraduate students of Ubon Ratchathani Rajabhat University.


               Methods: The study was a cross-sectional study. The samples were 560 undergraduate students of Ubon Ratchathani Rajabhat University, recruited by stratified random sampling. The data was collected by questionnaire, Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) Thai Version and impacts from depression questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression were both used to analyze the data.


               Results: The results revealed that the prevalence of depression among students was 29.5 %. Factors associated with depression were as follows: adequacy of spending (OR = 1.86, 95%CI = 1.22 - 2.82), health problems from studying (OR = 1.62, 95%CI = 1.07 - 2.44), fatigue (OR = 2.12, 95%CI = 1.41 - 3.18) difficulties in daily life (OR = 2.24, 95%CI = 1.46 - 3.45) academic achievement (OR = 1.73, 95%CI = 1.18 - 2.55) satisfaction with the university support system (OR = 0.27, 95%C I= 0.11-0.69), good feelings about the environment, lectures and friends (OR = 1.72, 95%CI = 1.11-2.67), sleeping patterns (OR = 1.88, 95%CI = 1.29 - 2.74) and exercise (OR = 3.80, 95%CI = 1.15 - 12.55).


               Conclusion: The results showed that the students had the most severe stress and most primary depression. Universities should provide mental health promotion or stress management activities for students including the establishment of a mental health consultation clinic to provide services to students.
