MENTAL HEALTH LITERACY, PERCEIVED STRESS AND PSYCHOLOGICAL DISTRESS IN CAREGIVERS OF PERSONS WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA AFTER THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To study the level and relationship of mental health literacy, perceived stress, and psychological distress among caregivers of people with schizophrenia after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods: This was a descriptive correlational study. The sample consisted of 125 caregivers of people with schizophrenia who received outpatient psychiatric care at a psychiatric hospital for adults under the Department of Mental Health, Ministry of Public Health, in the central region. Participants were selected according to inclusion criteria. The instruments included: 1) a personal information questionnaire of the caregiver and the person with schizophrenia, 2) Mental Health Literacy Scale, 3) Perceived Stress Scale, and 4) Psychological Distress Scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman’s correlation.
Results: After the COVID-19 pandemic, caregivers of people with schizophrenia had a moderate level of mental health literacy (45.6%, mean = 203.26, SD = 34.30), low stress (76.8%, mean = 18.67, SD = 6.26), and psychological distress with a tendency to be mildly abnormal (25.6%, mean = 21.22, SD = 7.77). Mental health literacy was negatively correlated at a low level with caregiver stress (r = -.27), particularly in the components of attitude (r = -.38), self-help (r = -.28), and mental health information seeking (r = -.31), with statistical significance (p-value < .01). Mental health literacy was not correlated with psychological distress; however, the three components mentioned above were also negatively correlated at a low level with psychological distress.
Conclusion: Mental health literacy was negatively correlated at a low level with caregiver stress. Three components were negatively correlated with both stress and psychological distress with statistical significance. The findings may be applied by healthcare personnel in the care of people with schizophrenia by promoting mental health literacy among caregivers, monitoring and assessing their stress, and providing appropriate support.
