Abstract

Objective: To examine gaming addiction behavior among junior high school students before and after receiving an integrated group counseling program.

Methods: The sample consisted of students with Game Addiction Screening Test (GAST) scores indicating "high engagement" or "addiction" levels. Participants were randomly selected from the population using simple random sampling and divided into experimental and control groups of 16 students each. The experimental group received standard care plus the integrated group counseling program developed by the researcher, based on social cognitive theory combined with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). The program consisted of 8 sessions: 1) self-assessment through sharing, listening, questioning, reflecting feelings, recognizing experiences, and awareness of gaming addiction effects on daily life; 2) identifying factors contributing to gaming addiction, cognitive structures, emotions and feelings, cognitive restructuring and reinforcement; 3) goal setting, planning problem-solving skills, coping with emotions and feelings, reinforcement and self-contracting; 4) practicing self-control skills and daily activity recording; 5) implementation and reinforcement; 6) follow-up and reflection on practice, session 1; 7) follow-up and reflection on practice, session 2; 8) evaluation and lessons learned. The control group received standard care. Research instruments included: 1) the integrated group counseling program; 2) the Gaming Addiction Test for Children and Adolescents, which was validated for content validity by three experts with reliability (0.68) and Cronbach's alpha coefficient (0.92). Data were analyzed using t-test statistics.

Results: 1) Gaming addiction behavior among junior high school students after receiving the integrated group counseling program was significantly better than before receiving the program at the .05 statistical significance level. 2) Gaming addiction behavior among junior high school students who received the integrated group counseling program was significantly better than the group receiving standard care at the .05 statistical significance level.

Conclusion: The integrated group counseling program improved gaming addiction behavior among junior high school students and can serve as a long-term preventive and corrective measure for gaming addiction.
