A PARTICIPATORY MODEL TO STRENGTHEN MENTAL HEALTH SKILLS FOR SUBSTANCE USE PREVENTION AMONG COMMUNITY NETWORK STAKEHOLDERS
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to 1) assess the community network stakeholders' awareness of substance use in the community and the importance of mental health skills, 2) evaluate the level of mental health skills for substance use prevention among community network partners, and 3) investigate a model for enhancing mental health skills for substance use prevention tailored for community network partners.
Methods: This was a mixed-methods research study. The qualitative component involved in-depth interviews with 40 key informants from Sub-district Health Promoting Hospitals (SHPHs) in Surat Thani, using a three-topic structured interview guide. The instrument's Content Validity Index was 1. Data was analyzed using thematic analysis. The quantitative component involved purposive sampling of 190 participants from randomly selected SHPHs across all districts in Surat Thani, conducted from August to September 2025. The instruments included four questionnaires: Stress management, Creative problem-solving, Positive communication, Pride enhancement and Goal setting for others (reliability coefficients: 0.74, 0.75, 0.75, and 0.80, respectively). Data was analyzed using frequency, percentage, and the Kruskal-Wallis One-way ANOVA statistic.
Results: The findings revealed that community network partners identified substance use issues through incident reports and behavioral observations, reflecting concerns over familial and environmental risk factors. Prioritized the importance of mental health care skills. The level of mental health skills was found to be: stress management at a moderate level (mean = 51.91, S.D. = 13.90), creative problem-solving at a high level (mean = 41.27, S.D. = 9.97), positive communication at a high level (mean = 66.64, S.D. = 11.49), and pride enhancement and life goal-setting at a high level (mean = 41.11, S.D. = 6.95). The proposed development model consists of three components: 1) Mental Health Skills of stakeholders, 2) stakeholders Participation, and 3) Capacity Building and a Support System.
Conclusion: Awareness of substance use problems, and their contributing factors foster consciousness and capacity building in mental health care among community network stakeholders. This process leads to active participation in implementing continuous and sustainable substance use prevention within the community.
