Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To examine the effects of a mental health literacy promotion program on the psychological self-care agency of healthcare personnel at Health Center 8 Udon Thani by comparing psychological self-care agency pre- and post-intervention, as well as comparing outcomes between the experimental and control groups.
Methods: This quasi-experimental study utilized a two-group pretest-posttest design. The sample comprised 62 healthcare personnel at Health Center 8 Udon Thani, equally divided into an experimental group (n = 31) and a control group (n = 31). The experimental group received the mental health literacy promotion program designed to enhance knowledge, understanding, and essential psychological self-care skills including accessing and evaluating mental health information, enhancing mental health literacy, developing positive thinking, cognitive restructuring and emotional regulation, stress coping and management, and applying knowledge to daily self-care. The control group received routine care. Research instruments consisted of the mental health literacy promotion program and a psychological self-care agency scale. Both instruments were validated for content validity by three experts, yielding Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) indices of 0.88 and 1.00, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation and independent and paired $t$-tests to evaluate within-group and between-group differences in psychological self-care agency scores.
Results: Following the intervention, healthcare personnel in the experimental group exhibited statistically significantly higher psychological self-care agency scores compared to baseline (p < .01$) and demonstrated statistically significantly higher scores than those in the control group (p < .01). The mental health literacy promotion program effectively enhanced personnel's knowledge and understanding of their mental health, facilitated appropriate access and utilization of mental health information, and improved emotional awareness and regulation. Furthermore, it fostered positive thinking, cognitive restructuring under adversity, constructive stress and occupational pressure management, self-confidence, self-esteem, and the application of these skills to daily psychological self-care.
Conclusion: The mental health literacy promotion program is effective in strengthening the psychological self-care agency of healthcare personnel by enhancing knowledge, emotional and stress management skills, cognitive restructuring, and adaptive coping mechanisms. Consequently, this program can be applied as a practical framework for promoting mental health and preventing psychological issues among personnel in healthcare organizations.
