THE EFFECT OF AN ADOLESCENT DEPRESSION CARE PROGRAM ON COUNSELING COMPETENCY AND MENTAL HEALTH LITERACY AMONG PRIVATE SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To compare counseling competency and mental health literacy regarding depression and suicide among private secondary school teachers before and after participating in the program, and to compare these outcomes between the experimental and control groups following the intervention.
Methods: A two-group pretest and posttest quasi-experimental design was employed. The sample consisted of 33 private secondary school teachers in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, allocated into an experimental group (n = 16) and a control group (n = 17). The experimental group participated in an Adolescent Depression Care Program comprising eight sessions of 90 minutes each over eight weeks, while the control group received two sessions of general training. Data were collected using the Psychological Counseling Competency Scale and the Depression and Suicide Mental Health Literacy Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using One-way Repeated Measures MANOVA and MANCOVA, with pretest scores as the covariate.
Results: Following completion of the program, teachers in the experimental group had significantly higher mean scores for overall counseling competency and literacy regarding depression and suicide than their pre-intervention scores and those of the control group. However, domain-specific analyses revealed no statistically significant between-group differences in the attitude and counseling skills domains.
Conclusion: The adolescent depression care program enhanced secondary school teachers' counseling competency and mental health literacy. Integrating the program into annual professional development may promote its sustainability in private schools. Further research is needed before implementation in public schools, given potential differences in organizational structure and teacher workload.
