Abstract

Objective: To examine the effects of a resilience enhancing program on resilience among lower secondary school students.

Methods: This quasi-experimental study employed a two-group pretest–posttest design. Thirty students with the lowest resilience scores (the 10 lowest-ranking students in each class) were assigned to an experimental group (n = 15) and a control group (n = 15). The experimental group participated in the resilience enhancing program once a week for eight weeks (eight sessions), while the control group received the school's standard guidance activities. The research instruments comprised the resilience enhancing program and a resilience assessment scale with a reliability coefficient of 0.95. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests and independent t-tests.

               Results: After the intervention, the experimental group showed significantly higher resilience scores than before the intervention (t = 6.12, p < .001, Cohen's d = 1.58, 95% CI [0.82, 2.34]). The experimental group also showed significantly higher scores than the control group (t = 6.08, p < .001, Cohen's d = 2.22, 95% CI [1.30, 3.14]), reflecting very large effect sizes.

Conclusion: The resilience enhancing program effectively enhanced resilience among lower secondary school students. Schools and mental health agencies may apply this program to promote adolescent mental health.
