Lessons Learned of the Nurse role in Alcohol Consumption Control in the Community: A case study in Mahasarakham Province.

Abstract

The qualitative research aims to explore the lesson learned on nurse role in controlling alcohol consumption: a case study in Mahasarakham province. The purposive sampling was used to recruit subjects.  Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five registered nurses and five government officials/civic leaders. The data analysis examined the validity of the data by using the data triangulation method.

The result of this study revealed that:

The nurse roles in controlling alcohol consumption included: 1) Nursing practice; screening alcoholics with appropriate treatment, educating and counseling for alcoholics and their families, and providing treatments and procedures 2) Planning; operating planning, budget planning, and leading in controlling alcohol consumption in community 3) Cooperating; cooperating between community and relevant internal or external networks  in controlling alcohol consumption 4) Servicing; counseling services, motivating in behavior changes, supporting local resources and wisdom to generate income and promote career for alcoholics and their families. The success factors, difficulties, and suggestions were an understanding of the context of the area but a lack of clarity in the assignment of the mission and nurse support to be able to produce academic work.

The results of this study can be used to be as a guideline to develop nursing potential for controlling alcohol consumption in community continuingly and supporting nurse role to be accepted.
