The Effect of Functional Health Literacy Promotion Teaching Package Related to Rapid Decline in Kidney Function on Knowledge and The Ability to Read and Understand Health Numbers Among Patients with Type 2 Diabetic Mellitus

This Randomized control trial research aimed to examine the effect of a functional health literacy promotion teaching package related to a rapid decline in kidney function on knowledge and the ability to read and understand health numbers among patients with type 2 diabetic mellitus. Subjects were type 2 diabetic mellitus patients with a rapid decline in kidney function. They were recruited through a simple random sampling method. Sixty patients were assigned to either control or experimental group, with 30 subjects in each group. The samples in the control group received regular care, while the experimental group received a functional health literacy promotion teaching package by applying the health literacy concept.
The results revealed that the experimental group had higher knowledge and ability to read and understand health numbers than before receiving the program (p-value<0.05) and had higher knowledge and the ability to read and understand the health numbers than those who received regular care (p-value<0.05)
Results from the study showed that the teaching package can be used to increase functional health literacy in diabetes clinic in order to enhance the health literacy among patients with diabetes mellitus who have rapid decline in kidney function.
