Effects of Baby Holding Position and Latching on Effective Sucking during Breastfeeding and Neonatal Jaundice in Yasothon Hospital

This quasi-experimental research aimed to study the effects of baby holding position and latching on effective sucking and neonatal jaundice. Samples were postpartum mothers and newborns, comprising of 30 for the control group and 30 of the experimental group. The samples were selected using purposive sampling technique. The control group received normal nursing care while the experimental group received teachings on baby holding position and latching according to Helfer and Wilson concept. Effective sucking of newborns and neonatal jaundice using 48-hour bilirubin were measured.
The results showed that 1) newborns in the experimental group had significantly more effective sucking at 48-hour than those in the control group withp-value=0.01 (95% CI=0.111-0.212); 2) neonatal jaundice at 48 hours, as measured by bilirubin of both experimental and control group had no difference with p-value=0.53 (95% CI=0.009-1.582).
It can be concluded that baby holding position according to Helfer and Wilson concept can be used as a guideline for promoting newborns effective sucking and successfully supporting 6 months of exclusive breastfeeding policy.
