Development of Integrated Care for Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder among Parents and Teachers in Kaeng Khro District, Chaiyaphum Province

Background and Objective: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by age-inappropriate and impairing patterns of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Integrated care among parents and teachers might reduce negative behaviors in children with ADHD. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a combination of parent management training (PMT) and teacher training (TL) on the symptoms of children with ADHD in Kaeng Khro district, Chaiyaphum province.
Methods: This quasi-experimental study employed a pre-test and post-test design conducted from July 2023 to September 2023. Participants in this study included 30 parents of children with ADHD (aged 6-12 years) and 70 primary school teachers. Parents of children with ADHD received a PMT program in which they were taught strategies for handling behavior problems. Teachers received a TL program that was developed to strengthen their knowledge about ADHD and develop strategies for addressing problem behaviors. Outcome measures included parenting practice, teachers’ knowledge of ADHD, and symptoms of ADHD.
Results: The results showed that the PMT program significantly improved parenting practices, while the TL program significantly enhanced teachers’ knowledge. The combination of PMT and TL significantly reduced symptoms of ADHD (inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity) among children with ADHD.
Conclusion: These finding support the recommended of offering PMT combined with TL as the preferred treatment for children with ADHD.
