Knowledge and Prevention Behaviors Regarding COVID-19 among the First-Year Nursing Students of Saint Theresa International College and Saint Louis College

Objectives of this correlational survey research were to evaluate knowledge and prevention behaviors regarding COVID-19 and to determine factors associated with COVID-19 prevention behaviors. The samples were 213 first-year nursing students selected using purposive sampling technique with 85 students from Saint Theresa International College and 128 students from Saint Louis College. Instrument used in this study was an online questionnaire on COVID-19 knowledge and prevention behaviors with content validity (IOC) of 0.67-1.00. The reliability of the questionnaire was tested with 30 first-year nursing students from Christian University of Thailand. The reliabilities of the knowledge and prevention behaviors were 0.749 and 0.763 respectively. The data were analyzed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations for descriptive statistics. The data were compared using independent t-tests, Chi-Square, and Pearson’s correlation coefficient.
Results showed that: 1) the students’ average knowledge scores were at an average level while the average prevention behavior scores were at a high level. 2) there was no significant difference on knowledge and prevention behaviors between the first-year students from both institutes. 3) There was a significant relationship between prevention behaviors and number of household members (=4.57, p=0.033) while knowledge was positively significantly correlated with prevention behaviors (r=0.231, p< 0.01). The results of this study can be used for educational training programs among the first-year nursing students on infection control practice for COVID-19 to keep students safe in their communities during online learning and practicing in the second year.
