Abstract

The purposes of this descriptive correlational study were to examine knowledge, attitudes, and perceived self-efficacy in heart failure care of senior nursing students at Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Sanpasithiprasong, and to explore the relationships among these three variables. The 130 student nurses were recruited as the samples of the study with the simple random sampling without replacement from student ID of those who agreed to participate the study. The data were collected from January to February 2021. All participants completed questionnaires consisted of 4 sections: demographic information and knowledge, attitudes, and perceived self-efficacy in heart failure care for patients. Overall content validity index of the questionnaire was 0.95. The knowledge in heart failure care section was tested using Kuder-Richardson KR-20 yielding the reliability of 0.90. The attitudes and perceived self-efficacy section of the questionnaire were tested using Cronbrach’s alpha coefficient yielding their reliability of 0.85 and 0.97, respectively. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman rank correlation coefficient.

The results indicated that most of the participants were women (89.20 %). The average age was 22.45 years (SD=2.62), with age ranged from 21 to 34 years. The samples’ knowledge in heart failure care was at a moderate level ( $gif.latex?\bar{X}$ =10.38, SD=2.70), while attitudes ( $gif.latex?\bar{X}$ =57.34, SD=7.99) and perceived self-efficacy ( $gif.latex?\bar{X}$ =79.54, SD=13.00) related to heart failure care were both at a high level. There were significant positive relationships between attitudes and perceived self-efficacy (r=0.51, p=0.000), knowledge and perceived self-efficacy (r=0.23, p=0.007). No significant relationship between knowledge and attitudes (r=0.12, p=0.172) was found. The result of this study provides the information for the planning of learning management to enhance the potential of nursing students that meets the needs of the health system and stakeholders.
