Abstract

Burnout is caused by chronic stress in workplace that affect medical services and patient care quality. This research aimed to study prevalence and associated factors of burnout among primary care personnel in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district using online self-reported questionnaires consisted of demographic data, workplace factors, Maslach burnout inventory, resilience quotient questionnaire and depression questionnaire.

There were 145 primary care providers completed the survey from the total of 240 persons contacted yielding the response rate of 60.42%. Their overall burnout prevalence was 0.69%. Among them, the prevalence of emotional exhaustion (11.73%) and depersonalization (9.65%) were at a high level while low personal accomplishment was at a low level (14.48%). Factors associated with of high emotional exhaustion inadequate quantity of personnel, with adjusted OR of 0.43 (0.19-0.97), and depression from low level and higher, with adjusted OR of 7.31 (1.45-36.73). Factors associated with high depersonalization were hypnotic drug usage within 2 weeks, with adjusted OR of 8.18 (1.96-34.25) and depression from low level and higher, with adjusted OR of 4.11 (1.01-16.71). Factors associated with low personal accomplishment were having bachelor's degree or higher, with adjusted OR of 0.28 (0.79-0.97) and having vacation within 6 months, with adjusted OR of 0.21 (0.06-0.72).

In conclusion, the prevalence of overall burnout of the primary care personnel in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya was at a low level. Preventive factors included having adequate quantity of personnel, education bachelor’s degree or higher, and vacations while risk factors included depression at low level and higher and hypnotic drug usage.
