A Comparative Study of the Effectiveness of Herbal SUM-YA Combined with the Use of Dhammanamai Principles and Non-herbal SUM-YA at a Thai Traditional Medicine Clinic in Pak Chom Hospital, Loei Province: A Case Study in Patients with Allergic Rhinitis

Abstract

This quasi-experimental study aimed to compare the effectiveness of herbal SUM-YA combined with Dhammanamai principles and non-herbal SUM-YA in patients with allergic rhinitis. Research instruments used was a total nasal symptom score (TNSS) assessment form. Volunteers were diagnosed with allergic rhinitis by modern medicine doctors and symptoms indicated inclusion criteria were referred to Thai traditional medicine clinic. The volunteers who participated in the project were divided into 2 groups: an experimental group who received herbal SUM-YA combined with Dhammanamai principles (34 subjects) and a control group who received non-herbal SUM-YA combined with Dhammanamai principles (34 subjects). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and independent t-test statistics.

The results showed that the comparison mean of the symptoms allergic rhinitis that received herbal medicine with Dhammanamai principles and non-herbal medicine in patients with allergic rhinitis. Moreover, the experimental group and the control group from the assessment by TNSS (total nasal symptoms score) that the experimental group had a mean of runny nose, itchy nose, stuffy nose, and sneezing symptoms that were significantly reduced than the control group at p-value<0.001. From the results of this study, it was indicated that the experimental group that received herbal medicine and Dhammanamai principles could reduce the symptoms in patients with allergic rhinitis.
