The Effectiveness of Video Media Combined with the D-METHOD Approach to Improve Knowledge and Practices for the Prevention of Endophthalmitis in Patients Undergoing Cataract Surgery

This quasi-experimental research with a one-group pretest–posttest design aimed to compare the mean scores of the knowledge and practice in preventing endophthalmitis infection among cataract surgery patients before and after receiving video media combined with D-METHOD education. Samples consisted of 30 patients who underwent cataract surgery at the eye ward of Sakon Nakhon Hospital. Research instruments included video media combined with D-METHOD education, a general information questionnaire, knowledge and practice assessment tools for preventing endophthalmitis infection in cataract surgery patients, and a satisfaction evaluation form for the video media combined with D-METHOD education. The instruments were validated by three content experts. The knowledge test, practices assessment, and satisfactions evaluation had content validity indices of 0.97, 0.97, and 1.00, respectively, with reliability coefficients of 0.72, 0.92, and 0.91, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-tests.
The results showed that the mean knowledge score for preventing endophthalmitis infection in cataract surgery patients after receiving video media combined with D-METHOD education (𝑥̅=14.70, SD=1.57) was significantly higher than before receiving the intervention (𝑥̅=13.56, SD=1.59). The mean practice score for preventing endophthalmitis infection in cataract surgery patients after receiving video media combined with D-METHOD education (𝑥̅=71.97, SD=5.28) was also significantly higher than before receiving the intervention (𝑥̅=69.26, SD=6.75) with statistical significance at the 0.05 level.
