Abstract

The study aimed to study the predictive factors of low birth weight (LBW) infants among mothers with full-term pregnancies at Chum Phae Hospital. The retrospective, unmatched case-control study was conducted in 186 postpartum mothers with full-term pregnancies at 48-72 hours after delivery at Chum Phae Hospital, Khon Kaen Province. The study group that gave birth to LBW infants consisted of 62 mothers, and 124 mothers was a comparative group who gave birth to normal weight infants. The instruments used were a general information questionnaire with a CVI value of 1 and a ST5 stress assessment with a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.74. The data were analyzed using chi-square statistics and 2-group logistic regression.

The results found that the factors significantly predicted the birth of LBW infants were first antenatal care later than 12 weeks (ORadj=3.76, p<0.001), pregnancy unpreparedness (ORadj=2.98, p=0.010), and abnormal infant health (ORadj=6.27, p<0.001), which could explain 23.0 percent of the variance in birth of LBW infants (R2=0.230, p<0.001).

In conclusion, late first antenatal care, unprepared for pregnancy, and abnormal infant health were factors that predicted the birth of LBW infants. This research can be used as preliminary data for providing antenatal care services, monitoring for fetal abnormalities, and caring for pregnant women who are unprepared for pregnancy.
