This descriptive correlational study examined the level of medication use awareness and factors associated with rational drug use awareness among older adults in Nong Kae Sub-district, Mueang District, Ubon Ratchathani Province. Samples comprised 94 older adults aged 60 years and above with at least one chronic condition requiring continuous medication, selected via multi-stage sampling. Data were collected using a four-part questionnaire covering personal factors, medication knowledge, attitudes toward rational drug use (based on the Health Belief Model), and rational drug use awareness. Content validity was confirmed (IOC≥0.80), with reliability (Cronbach's alpha) of 0.87. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlation coefficient.
Results showed that most participants were female (68.1%), Aged between 60 and 91 years old. Equal proportions had moderate and high medication knowledge (41.5% each), while only 17.0 percent had low knowledge. A positive attitude toward treatment adherence was significantly and positively correlated with rational drug use awareness (r=0.309, p<0.01). Attitudes toward herbal medicine/alternative treatments and toward side effects/medication risks showed no significant correlation with awareness.
These findings indicate that a positive attitude toward treatment adherence is a key factor associated with medication use awareness among older adults. Healthcare personnel should strengthen this attitude alongside continuous of education on the rational drugs use, particularly targeting those with low knowledge levels and polypharmacy, to reduce the risk of inappropriate medication use.
