Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to explore the symptom experience of serpentine supravenous hyperpigmentation, the perception of severity, distress level, and body image in patients with cancer receiving chemotherapy. The Symptom Management Theory was used as a conceptual framework. Eighty participants receiving chemotherapy were recruited from one chemotherapy ward at a university hospital in Bangkok. Four instruments were used to collect data. The questionnaires consisted of 1) the Personal Questionnaire, 2) the Perception and Severity of Serpentine Supravenous Hyperpigmentation Questionnaire, 3) the Distress Scale, and 4) the Body Image Scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results revealed that the average age of the sample was 59.43 years. Most participants were patients with solid tumor cancer, with which most of them were colon cancer (62.50%), stage 4 (63.75%), and treated with 5-fluorouracil as the component (90%). Approximately half of the appearance of hyperpigmentation (53.75%) began with black patches, with a soft appearance along the vein undergoing chemotherapy; the skin and dark veins were found most in the inner arm area (51.25%). The serpentine supravenous hyperpigmentation had moderate severity but produced low-lowest distress in the sample. The top three distresses included: 1)concern with high pigments along the vein receiving chemotherapy, 2) concern with selecting clothes to wear, and 3) feelings of embarrassment and lack of confidence, respectively.Perceived body image of the sample was rated as high. The results of this study could be used as basic knowledge for nurses and health care providers to develop a symptom management program for reducing the effects of the hyperpigmentation in patients with cancer.
