Main Article Content
Abstract
Proper self-management will reduce the severity and deterioration of knee osteoarthritis in older persons. This correlational-descriptive research aimed to describe health literacy, self-management, and the relationship between health literacy and selfmanagement among older persons with stage III knee osteoarthritis. Purposive sampling was used to recruit 88 older persons diagnosed with stage III knee osteoarthritis who received treatment at an outpatient department in a hospital in Pathum Thani Province. The instruments used for data collection were the Personal Information Questionnaire, the Health Literacy Questionnaire in the Elderly with Osteoarthritis of the Knee, and the Self-management Behavior Questionnaire in the Elderly with Knee Osteoarthritis. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation coefficient. The results showed that the mean health literacy score of older persons with stage III knee osteoarthritis was at a moderate level. The mean self-management score of older persons with stage III knee osteoarthritis was at a moderate level. Health literacy was statistically significantly positively associated with self-management at a moderate level. The results of this study provide basic information for nurses and health professionals to promote health literacy among older persons with knee osteoarthritis to improve self-management.
