Abstract

The purposes of this study were to develop nursing practice guidelines for promoting caregivers to provide childcare management for children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) after completion of treatment to compare caregiver’s childcare behaviors for children
with ALL before and after receiving the nursing practice guidelines and to monitor late effects after the completion of treatment. The sample consisted of 20 caregivers of children with ALL from 1 year to 12 years of age who received support from nursing practice guidelines developed based on Creer’s self-management concept consisting of goal selection, information collection, information processing and evaluation, decision making, action, and self-reaction. The guidelines were divided into three phases, including the preparation phase, processing phase, and follow-up phase for four months. Data were collected using the Caregiver’s Childcare
Behavior Questionnaire, and the Late Effects Assessment Form. Descriptive statistics and one-way repeated measures ANOVA were used for data analysis. The findings revealed that after receiving support from the nursing practice guidelines, the caregivers had significantly higher mean scores of childcare behaviors for children with ALL with statistical significance. After one month, there were two children having anemia. After four months, a total of children showed no signs or symptoms of abnormalities. The study results showed that nurses could apply the nursing practice guidelines to promote caregivers of children with ALL to modify the childcare behaviors after treatment completion for improving health.
