Abstract

This descriptive correlational research aimed to examine insomnia in persons with type 2 diabetes and study the relationships between depression, body mass index, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), dysfunctional beliefs and attitudes about sleep, sleep hygiene, and insomnia. A stratified random sampling method was used to recruit 141 persons with type 2 diabetes from the diabetes outpatient departments in four secondary and tertiary hospitals in Chanthaburi Province. All participants responded to a set of five questionnaires: the demographic characteristics questionnaire, the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, the Dysfunctional Beliefs and Attitudes about Sleep, the Sleep Hygiene Practice Scale, and the Insomnia Severity Index. Descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation were used in data analysis. The results revealed that 64.53% of the participants were female, with a mean age of 49.09 years, and the mean duration of diabetes was 6.86 years. The mean score for the Insomnia Severity Index among the participants was at a sub-threshold level of insomnia. Depression, body mass index, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C), dysfunctional beliefs and attitudes about sleep, and inadequate sleep hygiene were significantly positively correlated with insomnia in persons with type 2 diabetes. This study suggests that health services in preventing insomnia among persons with type 2 diabetes should emphasize decreasing depression, controlling glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C), maintaining an optimal body mass index, promoting sleep hygiene, and changing dysfunctional beliefs and attitudes about sleep.
