Health Perceptions, Health Behaviors and Health Care Needs among The Inmate with Metabolic Disorders

This descriptive research aimed to study the level of health perceptions, health behaviors and health care needs among the inmate with metabolic disorders and to compare health perceptions, health behaviors and health care needs base on factors that were gender, age, education, duration of illness and length of stay in prison. 270 inmate who has incarcerated in 9 prisons in northeast area were requited by stratified random sampling. The research instrumental had fore part : 1) demographic data 2) health perception questionnaires 3) health behaviors questionnaires 4) health care needs questionnaires. The content validity index were 0.80, 0.86 and 0.88 and the reliability using coefficient Cronbach's alpha were 0.88, 0.92 and 0.94 respectively. Descriptive statistic, t-test and One-Way ANOVA were used to analyze data. The results showed that

1. The overall mean score of health perception, health behaviors and health care needs were at a moderate level.

2. The inmates had medication used behaviors, health risks control behaviors in high level, whereas eating behaviors, physical activity and stress control behaviors score were at a moderate level.

3. Psychological, social and spiritual needs score were at a high level

4. The inmate who had different in sex, age and duration of illness also had significantly difference in health perceptions, health behaviors and health care needs.

The study was recommended that should promote health perception and health behavior of inmates with metabolic disorders. Especially in eating behavior, physical activity and stress control behavior. And meet the needs of health services, especially in the psychological, social and spiritual needs. Taking in to the difference of sex, age and duration of illness.
