Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic is a public health problem that has challenged the entire world and caused a number of effects ranging from increasing public health expenses, mortality rates, long-term complications, socio-economic problems, to mental health issues. Particularly affected by the pandemic are the older persons, who are considered as a high-risk group due to their age-induced health vulnerability and decline of energy reserve. Amongst the conditions displayed by older persons are atypical symptoms and medical signs, multiple congenital diseases, dependence on multiple medicines, and relatively slow adjustment to social changes. To prevent such negative effects, holistic nursing for the promotion of older persons’ physical, mental, psychosocial, and spiritual health for the prevention of Covid-19 is an important and necessary mechanism to promote better life quality and the ability to adjust to such a critical situation.

The primary objective of this article is to propose the concept of holistic nursing to promote health quality and prevent Covid-19 infection in older persons. In addition to presenting basic information of Covid-19, its transmissibility, and its adverse effects on older persons, this article discusses older persons’ immune system changes causing increased susceptibility to infection, atypical symptoms, and medical signs different from those observed in other age groups, as well as application of theoretical counter-Covid-19 health promotion concepts and directions for older persons
