Abstract

In Thailand, there has been an increase in the number of patients diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Standard treatment for patients with HCC who have symptoms and are diagnosed with Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer stage B is transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE). However, proper nutritional status is essential for patients to receive treatment according to the treatment cycle. Dietary care is a critical part of the treatment for patients with HCC who are undergoing TACE and requires the cooperation of a multidisciplinary team led by nurses.

The aim of this article is to present a theoretical concept to promote dietary self-care for patients with HCC who are undergoing TACE based on Orem’s conceptual framework and approaches to promote proper dietary self-care. The essential components include: 1) the concept of promoting self-care; 2) dietary care with a multidisciplinary team; 3) theories and research related to promoting dietary self-care, including assessment of nutritional status, dietary care for patients with HCC, and dietary advice; and 4) the application of dietary self-care guidelines for patients with HCC who are undergoing TACE. Nurses play a significant role in promoting dietary self-care by applying the goal-directed self-care concept, adapting strategies to support individuals, monitoring progress, and providing continuous follow-up.
