Abstract

Helping patients have a good death is an important goal for nurses providing pediatric patient care at the end-of-life. These nurses relieve the physical, psychological, and spiritual suffering for pediatric patients and their family. This descriptive correlational research study aimed to study the relationship between nurses’ knowledge, attitudes, and nursing practice for a good death in pediatric patients at the end-of-life. The participants were selected using purposive sampling and consisted of 97 registered nurses who worked in the pediatric chronic disease department in tertiary hospitals in upper Northeastern Thailand. The research instruments consisted of 1) the demographic questionnaire, 2) the nurses’ practice for a good death in pediatric patients at the end-of-life questionnaire, 3) the nurses’ knowledge for a good death in pediatric patients at the end-of-life questionnaire, and 4) the nurses’ attitudes toward pediatric patients at the end-of-life questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation coefficient.

The results of the study revealed that nurses had a high level of practice ( = 60.85, SD = 14.61), high level of knowledge ( = 15.16, SD = 2.14), and good attitudes ( = 3.68, SD = 0.31) toward good death in pediatric patients at the end-of–life. In additional, nurses’ knowledge had a moderate statistically significant positive correlation with the nurses’ practice (r = 0.61, p < 0.01) and nurses’ attitude had a low statistically significant positive correlation with the nurses’ practice (r = 0.24, p < 0.05).

The findings indicated that knowledge and attitude of nurses were associated with good death nursing practices in pediatric patients at the end-of-life. This information can be used to enhance knowledge and good attitudes among nurses to provide effective practices for good death in pediatric patients at the end-of-life.
