Abstract

Illness with cancer and complications from its treatment in children with cancer require close and continuing care from caregivers all times. The long term care for children with cancer may increase caregiving burden for caregivers. The purpose of this correlational descriptive study was to investigate the caregiving burden among caregivers of children with cancer receiving chemotherapy, and to explore the relationship between self-efficacy, social support, and caregiving burden among these caregivers. The conceptual framework of this study was based on Oberst (1990) and literature review. Participants were caregivers of children with cancer aged 1 to 5 years who received chemotherapy at the pediatric department at three tertiary hospitals, northern Thailand from October 2017 to February 2018. A total of 85 participants were selected by purposive sampling. The research instruments consisted of the Caregiving Burden Among Caregivers of Children with Cancer Receiving Chemotherapy Questionnaire, the Self-Efficacy for Caregivers of Children with Cancer Receiving Chemotherapy Questionnaire, and the Social Support for Caregivers of Children with Cancer Questionnaire. The reliability of questionnaires were .83 .92 and .93, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation coefficient.

          The results were as follows:

  1. Most of the caregivers of children with cancer receiving chemotherapy (81.2%) had the mean score of caregiving burden at a moderate level (=58.51, S.D.=10.64).
  2. Self-efficacy and Social support were statistically significant negative correlation with the caregiving burden among caregivers of children with cancer receiving chemotherapy at a moderate level (r = -.35, p<.01, r = -.36, p <.01), respectively.

Therefore, healthcare providers should develop strategies to enhance self-efficacy and social support for these caregivers in order to decrease their caregiving burden while their children with cancer receive chemotherapy.
